Emergency departments across Coravia will gain 4,000 additional nursing posts before December under a $520m winter workforce plan published this morning by the health ministry.

The package funds 2,600 newly qualified posts, retention bonuses of $3,500 for emergency and acute staff, and a fast-track return scheme that officials say has already re-registered 900 former nurses. A further $90m expands overnight discharge teams to free beds earlier in the day.

Emergency attendances ran 9 per cent above the five-year average last winter, with the ambulance service twice declaring national escalation. “We are buying capacity in July because you cannot buy it in January,” Health Minister Corin Aldis said at Meridale General Hospital.

The Royal College of Nursing called the numbers “serious money, seriously late”, noting that a fifth of funded emergency posts were unfilled as of June. “Bonuses help. Rosters that let people see their families help more,” said its general secretary, Ana Rhys, pointing to the plan’s pilot of self-scheduling in six trusts.

Hospital chief executives broadly welcomed the settlement while warning that social-care capacity remains the system’s exit door. The ministry publishes monthly staffing counts from September — the metric on which, by its own framing, this plan will be judged.
